What was the Ark’s resting place called in Genesis?
Answer
The mountains of Ararat
Answer
The mountains of Ararat
Genesis says Noah’s Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.
Genesis 8:4 states that the Ark rested on the mountains of Ararat on the seventeenth day of the seventh month. The wording is plural: it identifies a mountainous region or range rather than naming one peak.
This differs from traditions that identify a specific mountain, especially Mount Ararat in modern eastern Turkey. Genesis itself does not say that the Ark rested on the summit of that single volcano. Later Jewish, Christian, Islamic, and popular traditions have connected the story with various locations in the broader region.
The Quran uses a different place-name for the Ark’s resting location, naming Mount Judi. Because the biblical and Quranic accounts use different names, “the mountains of Ararat” is the precise Genesis answer rather than a generic modern mountain name.
