What was the Ark’s length in Genesis: 300, 50, or 30 cubits?
Answer
300 cubits
Answer
300 cubits
Genesis gives Noah’s Ark a length of 300 cubits.
Genesis 6:15 lists three dimensions: 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. The length is therefore ten times the stated height and six times the stated width, producing a long, rectangular vessel rather than a conventional pointed ship in many reconstructions.
A cubit was an ancient unit based broadly on the length of a forearm, but its exact value varied by culture and period. For that reason, converting the ark’s dimensions into modern metres or feet involves an estimate rather than a single universally certain number.
The text gives proportions, not a complete engineering specification. It does not state the shape of the bow, the thickness of the timbers, or the exact deck plan. The 300-cubit figure is nevertheless one of the narrative’s clearest numerical measurements.
