What was the Ark’s entrance called in Genesis’s construction description?

The story behind the answer

Genesis describes Noah’s Ark as having a door in its side. Genesis 6:16 gives the construction details alongside the Ark’s opening near the top and its three levels. The wording identifies the entrance’s position but does not provide a nautical term such as stern or bow.

The side entrance is part of the brief architectural description that also includes the Ark’s dimensions and internal divisions. Genesis does not say that the door was at the front or rear, and it does not describe hinges, stairs, or a mechanism for closing it. Artistic reconstructions therefore make many design choices beyond what the text states.

The roof opening is a separate feature and should not be mistaken for the entrance. Genesis also later says that Noah went into the Ark and that God shut him in, but that statement does not change the entrance’s described location. The precise answer is the side door.
