What was Noah’s father called in the Book of Genesis?

Noah’s father is called Lamech in the Book of Genesis.

Genesis 5 presents Noah within a genealogy running from Adam through the early generations. Lamech is identified as Noah’s father, and the passage says Lamech named his son Noah because he hoped the child would bring comfort from the difficult labor associated with the cursed ground.

Lamech should not be confused with Methuselah, who is Noah’s grandfather in the same genealogy. Noah’s sons are Shem, Ham, and Japheth, so those names belong to the next generation rather than to his parentage.

The name Lamech also belongs to another figure in Genesis 4, a descendant of Cain. That earlier Lamech has a different family line. The shared name can cause confusion when readers compare the two genealogies, but Genesis 5 clearly identifies the Lamech who is Noah’s father.
