What was Noah’s age when the Flood began, according to Genesis’s Noah’s Ark account?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah was 600 years old when the Flood began.

Genesis 7:6 states that Noah was six hundred years old when the waters of the Flood came upon the earth. The statement forms part of the narrative’s internal chronology and appears alongside the date given for the Flood’s beginning. Genesis 7:11 similarly frames the event within Noah’s 600th year.

The number is not Noah’s age when God first instructs him to build the Ark. Genesis gives earlier and later ages in Noah’s life: he is 500 when his sons are introduced, and Genesis 9:28 says he lived 350 years after the Flood, dying at 950.

These unusually large ages belong to the primeval genealogies and chronology of Genesis. They are not presented in the text as ordinary modern human lifespans. The answer is therefore a specific figure in the biblical account, not an independently verified biographical age.
