Metallica reached number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 when it first topped the chart.
The achievement made it Metallica’s first album to reach the summit of the Billboard 200. The record debuted at number one and stayed there for four consecutive weeks, a major commercial milestone for a band previously identified primarily with the thrash metal scene.
Its chart success reflected several changes working together: the songs were generally more concise, the production was clearer and heavier, and the band supported the release with extensive touring. Singles such as “Enter Sandman,” “The Unforgiven,” and “Nothing Else Matters” also expanded the album’s audience.
The album’s later sales history is separate from its debut chart position. It became one of the best-selling albums in the United States and remained on the Billboard 200 for an exceptionally long period, but those later achievements do not change the original peak position: number one.
