Metallica was Metallica’s first Grammy-winning album, receiving Best Metal Performance in 1992.
The award recognized the album commonly called The Black Album. It was a major milestone because Metallica had previously received Grammy nominations, including one for ...And Justice for All, but had not won in the category.
The album’s victory followed a dramatic expansion of the band’s audience. Its polished production, shorter songs, and memorable singles brought Metallica into the mainstream while preserving its heavy musical identity.
The 1992 Grammy should not be confused with the band’s later awards for individual songs. “Enter Sandman” was nominated for Best Rock Song, while Metallica’s subsequent Grammy wins included honors for recordings such as “Better than You,” “Whiskey in the Jar,” and later “My Apocalypse.”
