McDonald's original mascot was Speedee, a hamburger-headed chef used in the company's early branding.
Speedee appeared in McDonald's signage and advertising during the 1950s, before Ronald McDonald became the chain's best-known character. The character reflected the Speedee Service System, the McDonald brothers' emphasis on quickly prepared, standardized food.
Speedee is sometimes confused with Speedee Service, the operating system that inspired his name. He was also distinct from later McDonaldland figures such as Grimace and the Hamburglar.
As McDonald's visual identity became more focused on the Golden Arches and Ronald McDonald, Speedee gradually disappeared from mainstream consumer advertising. His importance remains historical: the character connected the brand directly to speed, consistency, and the restaurant's early self-service model.
