What was Kenner’s first Star Wars playset, released in 1978?

The story behind the answer

Kenner’s first Star Wars playset, released in 1978, was the Death Star Space Station.

The playset recreated the Death Star interior seen in the 1977 film. It was designed for Kenner’s 3.75-inch action figures and included multiple levels, recognizable rooms, a trash compactor, an elevator, and a rotating cardboard laser cannon.

The product is often called the Death Star playset, but “Death Star Space Station” is the name used in contemporary Kenner material. It was not a complete spherical Death Star model; the toy represented selected interior sections on a large vertical structure.

Kenner later produced playsets based on locations such as the Millennium Falcon, Cloud City, Jabba’s Palace, and the Ewok village. The Death Star Space Station remains one of the best-known pieces from the original vintage Star Wars toy range.
