Facebook’s major 2011 profile redesign was called Timeline.
Facebook introduced Timeline at its F8 developer conference in September 2011. The design organized a person’s posts, photographs, life events, and other activity in reverse chronological order, creating a visual history that users could browse by date. It gradually replaced the older profile format.
Timeline was more than a cosmetic change. It encouraged users to add past events, including moments from before they joined Facebook, and it gave them tools to control which posts appeared on their profile. The feature also influenced how Facebook presented photographs and shared activity.
Readers sometimes confuse Timeline with News Feed. News Feed is the continuously updated stream of posts from friends, Pages, and groups. Timeline is the profile-based history of one individual or organization. Facebook also previously used the word “Wall” for the main profile posting area, but Timeline became the name of the 2011 redesign.
