Facebook’s first dedicated virtual-reality headset after acquiring Oculus was Oculus Rift.
Oculus Rift was a virtual-reality headset developed by Oculus VR, the company Facebook agreed to acquire in 2014. Consumer versions of the Rift were designed primarily for use with a powerful personal computer and offered stereoscopic visual display and head tracking for immersive VR experiences.
The consumer version launched in March 2016. It followed earlier development kits that helped developers and enthusiasts create software for the emerging modern VR market. Rift became one of the best-known PC-based VR headsets of its era.
The answer is sometimes confused with Oculus Quest, which launched in 2019 as a standalone headset that did not require a gaming computer. Facebook later rebranded Oculus hardware under the Meta Quest name, but the original Rift product retained its historical Oculus identity.
