What was Destiny’s Child’s original group name before its 1996 renaming?
Answer
Girl’s Tyme
Answer
Girl’s Tyme
Destiny’s Child was originally called Girl’s Tyme.
Girl’s Tyme formed in Houston in 1990 and included Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson, and other early members. The group competed on the television talent program Star Search in 1993, although it did not win. Its lineup and management changed during the following years.
In 1996, the group signed with Columbia Records and adopted the name Destiny’s Child. The new name came from a passage in the biblical Book of Isaiah and marked the beginning of the group’s best-known recording era. Destiny’s Child released its self-titled debut album in 1998.
People sometimes use Destiny’s Child for the entire history of the group, but Girl’s Tyme is the earlier name. The group later became a trio of Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams, the lineup associated with major hits such as “Say My Name.”
