What was Destiny’s Child originally called before changing its name?

The story behind the answer

Destiny’s Child was originally called Girl’s Tyme before adopting its better-known name.

The group formed in Houston, Texas, in the early 1990s, with Beyoncé Knowles among its original members. Girl’s Tyme competed on the television talent program Star Search in 1993, although the group did not win. The experience nevertheless helped bring attention to the young performers.

The lineup changed repeatedly during the group’s development. In 1996, the act signed with Columbia Records and changed its name to Destiny’s Child. The new name became associated with the quartet’s early commercial success, including hits such as “No, No, No” and “Say My Name.”

Destiny’s Child eventually became a trio consisting of Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams. The group became one of the best-selling female groups in music before going on hiatus in 2006.
