Destiny’s Child was originally called Girl’s Tyme.
The group formed in Houston, Texas, in the early 1990s, with Beyoncé among its original members. Girl’s Tyme competed on the television talent program Star Search in 1993, although the group did not win. The experience became part of the early history of the act that would later become Destiny’s Child.
The group went through several lineup changes and management arrangements before signing with Columbia Records. Its name was changed to Destiny’s Child, a phrase associated with the biblical Book of Isaiah, before the group achieved mainstream success.
Destiny’s Child became one of the best-selling female groups in music history. Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams formed the trio’s most famous lineup, especially during the period that produced hits such as “Say My Name,” “Survivor,” and “Bootylicious.” Girl’s Tyme therefore refers to the group’s early developmental name, not a later album or single.
