What was Destiny’s Child called before it adopted its best-known name?

The story behind the answer

Destiny’s Child was originally called Girl’s Tyme before adopting its best-known name.

Girl’s Tyme formed in Houston in 1990, when Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson, and several other young performers began working together. The group competed on the television talent program Star Search in 1993, although it did not win.

The lineup and name changed during the group’s early development. In 1996, the members became known as Destiny’s Child, a name inspired by a passage in the biblical Book of Isaiah. The group signed with Columbia Records and released its self-titled debut album in 1998.

Destiny’s Child later became one of the best-selling female groups in music history. Its major hits included “Bills, Bills, Bills,” “Say My Name,” “Survivor,” and “Bootylicious.” Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams became the group’s most recognized final lineup. The earlier name Girl’s Tyme is sometimes omitted from short biographies because it refers to the group’s pre-record-label period.
