Before it became Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé’s musical group was called Girl’s Tyme. The group formed in Houston in 1990 and originally included Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson, and Támar Davis, with other early line-up changes during its development.
Girl’s Tyme gained wider attention after appearing on the television talent competition Star Search in 1993. Although the group did not win, the experience exposed its young members to national television and helped motivate them to continue performing. Mathew Knowles later managed the group and helped guide its professional transition.
The act eventually adopted the name Destiny’s Child and signed with Columbia Records. Its best-known early trio consisted of Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams, while the group had earlier line-ups involving LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett. Girl’s Tyme is therefore the group’s original name, not the title of an album or a separate unrelated band.
