Beyoncé’s first major acting role was Carmen Brown in the 2001 MTV film Carmen: A Hip Hopera. The film is a modern musical adaptation of the opera Carmen, relocating the story into a contemporary setting and replacing operatic arias with hip-hop and R&B performances.
Beyoncé played Carmen, a character based on the title figure from Georges Bizet’s opera. Mekhi Phifer played Hill, the film’s counterpart to Don José, while Mos Def and Wyclef Jean were also part of the cast. Robert Townsend directed the production for MTV.
Carmen: A Hip Hopera arrived before Beyoncé’s best-known feature-film roles in Austin Powers in Goldmember, Dreamgirls, and Cadillac Records. It is sometimes overlooked because it was made for television rather than released theatrically. Nevertheless, the project established Beyoncé as an on-screen performer while she was still closely associated with Destiny’s Child.
