Beyoncé’s first headlining Coachella performance, later released as Homecoming, is commonly known as Beychella. She headlined the festival in April 2018, becoming the first Black woman to headline Coachella.
The performance was built around a large marching-band and majorette-inspired production. It included musicians, dancers, a step-show aesthetic, and appearances by Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, reconnecting Beyoncé with her Destiny’s Child history.
The set also functioned as a celebration of historically Black colleges and universities, drawing on their band traditions, Greek-letter organizations, dance lines, and communal performance culture. That framing gave the show a cultural and educational dimension beyond a conventional festival headline set.
Netflix released Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé in April 2019. The documentary combined performance footage with rehearsal and preparation scenes, while a live album presented the set musically. “Beychella” is an informal nickname, whereas Coachella was the official festival name and Homecoming was the documentary title.
