Survivor was Beyoncé’s first Billboard 200 number-one album as a member of Destiny’s Child.
Destiny’s Child released Survivor on May 1, 2001, through Columbia Records. By that point, Beyoncé was the group’s most prominent lead vocalist, alongside Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. The album followed The Writing’s on the Wall and was the group’s third studio album.
Survivor debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 663,000 copies sold in its first week in the United States, according to contemporary chart reporting. Its title track became one of Destiny’s Child’s best-known songs and was widely understood as a statement of resilience during a period of lineup changes and intense media attention.
The album also produced the singles “Bootylicious” and “Emotion.” The group later released Destiny Fulfilled in 2004, but Survivor remains the key early album associated with Beyoncé’s first number-one album position on the main U.S. albums chart.
