What was Beyoncé’s childhood performance group called before it became Destiny’s Child?

The story behind the answer

Beyoncé’s childhood performance group was called Girl’s Tyme before it became Destiny’s Child.

Girl’s Tyme formed in Houston in the early 1990s and included Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson, and other young performers at different stages. The group entered talent competitions and performed locally, building the experience that eventually led to a recording contract.

The name changed during the group’s development. After appearing on the television program Star Search, the members continued refining their lineup and identity. By the time they signed with Columbia Records, they were known as Destiny’s Child.

Girl’s Tyme is sometimes confused with an official Destiny’s Child album or single, but it was the group’s earlier name. The transition shows how Beyoncé’s professional career began through years of preparation rather than with her later solo debut.
