Lemonade was Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album exploring themes of Black womanhood, heritage, and personal relationships.
The album was released on April 23, 2016, after the premiere of its accompanying hour-long film on HBO. Its music draws from R&B, pop, rock, blues, soul, funk, and hip-hop, creating a deliberately wide-ranging portrait of identity and resilience.
Lemonade includes “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” and “Daddy Lessons.” The visual film incorporates poetry by Warsan Shire and imagery connected to African American history, Southern culture, and Beyoncé’s family background.
The album received broad critical acclaim and won the Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album. It is separate from Beyoncé’s 2013 self-titled visual album, although both projects use film as an essential part of their presentation.
