Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album about grief, betrayal, and Black womanhood was Lemonade.
Lemonade was released on April 23, 2016, alongside an hour-long film broadcast on HBO. The album blends R&B with rock, country, blues, soul, hip-hop, and electronic music, giving it a deliberately wide musical palette.
Its visual film is divided into chapters with titles such as “Intuition,” “Denial,” “Anger,” and “Hope.” The project draws on themes of family, cultural identity, marital conflict, healing, and resilience.
The album includes “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” and “All Night.” Lemonade received widespread critical acclaim and was nominated for Album of the Year at the 59th Grammy Awards.
