Lemonade was Beyoncé’s 2016 album inspired by themes of infidelity, healing, and Black identity.
The album was released on April 23, 2016, alongside a one-hour film of the same name on HBO. Its songs and film are organized around emotional stages including intuition, denial, anger, apathy, emptiness, accountability, reform, forgiveness, hope, and redemption.
Lemonade drew on R&B, rock, country, blues, reggae, and electronic music. Its best-known tracks include “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” and “All Night.” The project also incorporates poetry by Warsan Shire, whose words help connect the songs into a larger narrative.
The album prompted extensive discussion about Beyoncé’s marriage, but its themes are broader than a literal personal diary. It addresses family history, racial injustice, cultural heritage, motherhood, and resilience. Lemonade became Beyoncé’s sixth consecutive number-one album on the Billboard 200.
