Answer
Lunar Roving Vehicle
Answer
Lunar Roving Vehicle
Apollo 15’s lunar rover was officially called the Lunar Roving Vehicle.
Apollo 15 was the first mission to use this battery-powered, foldable vehicle on the Moon. The Lunar Roving Vehicle, or LRV, let David Scott and James Irwin travel much farther from the Falcon lunar module than astronauts could walk while carrying tools and collecting samples.
Boeing and General Motors developed the rover for NASA. It weighed about 210 kilograms on Earth, had four-wheel drive, and reached roughly 13 kilometers per hour. On the Moon, its low weight and large wire-mesh wheels helped it cross dusty and uneven ground.
The phrase “moon buggy” is a popular informal description, not the vehicle’s official name. LRVs were also used on Apollo 16 and Apollo 17, with each surviving rover remaining on the lunar surface.
