Apollo 12’s lunar module was called Intrepid.
Intrepid carried commander Charles “Pete” Conrad and lunar module pilot Alan Bean from lunar orbit to the Ocean of Storms on November 19, 1969. Command module pilot Richard Gordon stayed in lunar orbit aboard Yankee Clipper.
Apollo 12 was the second mission to land astronauts on the Moon. Its landing was more precise than Apollo 11’s and allowed the crew to reach the Surveyor 3 spacecraft, an uncrewed probe that had landed there in 1967. Conrad and Bean inspected the probe and brought selected parts back to Earth.
The names can be confusing because Apollo spacecraft had separate names for their command modules and lunar modules. Apollo 12’s command module was Yankee Clipper, while Intrepid was the lunar module. Apollo 11’s lunar module, by contrast, was Eagle.
