Apollo 11’s lunar module was called Eagle.
Eagle carried Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin from lunar orbit to the Moon’s surface on July 20, 1969. Its call sign came from the mission’s official emblem, which showed an eagle carrying an olive branch.
Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit aboard the command module Columbia while Eagle descended. After the landing, Armstrong reported, “The Eagle has landed,” one of the most famous phrases of the space age.
Eagle lifted off from the Moon’s surface the next day and rejoined Columbia. The two spacecraft names are sometimes confused because Columbia was the command module and Eagle was the lunar module.
