What was A. A. Milne’s full birth name, the author of Winnie-the-Pooh?

The story behind the answer

A. A. Milne’s full birth name was Alan Alexander Milne.

Milne was born in Kilburn, London, on 18 January 1882. He became best known for writing Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner, but he was also a poet, playwright, novelist and contributor to the humour magazine Punch.

Milne studied mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge, and graduated in 1903. Before the success of Pooh, he wrote extensively for adults, including plays and detective fiction. The initials “A. A.” became the familiar form of his name in publishing.

A common mix-up is to assume that A. A. stood for a repeated first name or for “Andrew,” but the initials represent Alan Alexander. His son, Christopher Robin Milne, later inspired the human character in the Pooh stories. The 2026 centenary marks 100 years since the first Winnie-the-Pooh story collection appeared.
