What type of waistline sits at the natural waist and is commonly used in classic bridal gowns?
Answer
Natural waistline
Answer
Natural waistline
A natural waistline sits at the body’s natural waist and is commonly used in classic bridal gowns.
In clothing terminology, the natural waist is the narrow area between the rib cage and hips, usually close to the navel. A gown with a natural waistline joins the bodice and skirt at that point, creating a familiar balanced proportion. Many ball gowns and A-line dresses use this construction.
The term is easy to confuse with an empire waist, which sits immediately below the bust, or a dropped waist, which falls lower on the hips. A basque waistline forms a V or point below the natural waist. These placements change the visual length of the torso and the way a skirt begins.
A natural waistline is not the same as a silhouette. “Natural waist” describes where the garment divides, while terms such as ball gown, A-line, and mermaid describe the overall shape. One dress can therefore have a natural waistline and an A-line silhouette.
