What type of shop does Mr Gruber run in the Paddington stories?

Mr Gruber runs an antique shop in the Paddington stories.

Mr Gruber is one of Paddington’s trusted adult friends. His shop is a place where Paddington learns about old objects, hears stories, and enjoys visits that often become important parts of the plot. Mr Gruber usually addresses him as “Mr Brown,” reflecting Paddington’s adopted surname.

The shop is not a bakery, despite Paddington’s frequent connection with food and treats. It is also not the Browns’ home or a railway business. The antique-shop setting allows the stories to introduce historical objects, unusual curiosities, and gentle mysteries without losing their family-friendly tone.

Mr Gruber’s friendship with Paddington is especially notable because it gives the bear a companion outside the Brown household. Their regular outings and conversations are a recurring feature of the original books.
