What type of animation was used for Tim Burton’s 2005 film Corpse Bride?

The story behind the answer

Tim Burton’s 2005 film Corpse Bride uses stop-motion animation.

In stop motion, physical puppets or models are photographed one frame at a time, with tiny adjustments made between frames. When the images are played in sequence, the figures appear to move. Corpse Bride used specially constructed puppets and detailed miniature sets to create its gothic fantasy world.

The film marked Burton’s return to stop-motion feature filmmaking after The Nightmare Before Christmas, although Henry Selick directed that earlier movie. Corpse Bride was directed by Burton and Mike Johnson, who had worked in stop-motion animation.

The story follows Victor Van Dort, who accidentally becomes engaged to the deceased Emily while practicing his wedding vows in a forest. Its visual contrast between the dull land of the living and the colorful Land of the Dead is one of the production’s most recognizable design features.
