What TV name replaced Asha Greyjoy from the novels?

The story behind the answer

What TV name replaced Asha Greyjoy from the novels? The television series renamed her Yara Greyjoy.

Yara Greyjoy is the Game of Thrones counterpart to Asha Greyjoy, the character’s name in George R. R. Martin’s novels. Gemma Whelan played Yara in the HBO adaptation, where she is the daughter of Balon Greyjoy and sister of Theon Greyjoy. She is introduced as a confident Ironborn leader and captain.

The change was made largely to avoid confusion with Osha, the wildling woman who becomes associated with Bran Stark. Because “Asha” and “Osha” sound very similar when spoken, the show changed Asha’s name to Yara. The alteration also helped distinguish the two characters for television viewers following a large ensemble cast.

Yara retains the family connection and much of the character’s independent, seafaring identity, but the adaptation changes aspects of her personality and storyline. A common mistake is to treat Yara and Asha as separate Greyjoy siblings; they are the same character in the television adaptation and the novels, respectively.
