What three levels did Genesis specify inside Noah's Ark?

The story behind the answer

Genesis specified lower, second, and third decks inside Noah’s Ark.

Genesis 6:16 describes the ark as having three levels. Many English translations use “lower, second, and third stories,” while others say “lower, middle, and upper decks.” The wording differs, but the three-tier arrangement is the same.

The same verse describes a window or opening near the top and a door in the ark’s side. It also gives the vessel’s length, breadth, and height as 300, 50, and 30 cubits. These details present the ark as a large, enclosed structure rather than a conventional sailing ship.

The Bible does not provide a detailed internal floor plan or explain how particular animals were assigned to each level. Claims about precise compartments or modern ship layouts go beyond the information in Genesis. The text’s clear architectural point is the existence of three levels.
