What style was Fleetwood Mac primarily known for in its early years?

The story behind the answer

Fleetwood Mac was primarily known for British blues in its early years. The band formed in London in 1967 around guitarist and singer Peter Green, drummer Mick Fleetwood, and bassist John McVie, all connected to the British blues scene.

Their first records emphasized electric blues, blues-rock, and interpretations of Chicago blues. Green’s expressive guitar playing, Jeremy Spencer’s slide guitar, and the rhythm section’s tight, forceful backing gave the early group a sound far removed from the polished pop-rock associated with later albums such as Rumours. The band’s 1968 debut album reached No. 4 in the UK despite having no hit single.

Fleetwood Mac gradually broadened its style. “Albatross” became a UK No. 1 instrumental in 1968, while “Black Magic Woman” and “Need Your Love So Bad” showed the group’s range. Later personnel changes—including Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, and Stevie Nicks—moved the band toward pop rock and soft rock. That evolution is why people sometimes identify Fleetwood Mac mainly with the 1970s, even though its foundation was British blues.
