The sequence begun by Metallica’s “The Unforgiven” and followed by “The Unforgiven II” continues with “The Unforgiven III.”
The original “The Unforgiven” appeared on Metallica’s 1991 self-titled album, commonly called The Black Album. Its lyrical focus centers on an individual struggling against people or forces attempting to control him.
Metallica later created “The Unforgiven II” for the 1997 album Reload. “The Unforgiven III” followed on 2008’s Death Magnetic. The titles form a recurring series, but the songs are not simply three parts of one continuous narrative or a single album trilogy.
The numbering can be confused with the phrase “The Unforgiven” appearing in other contexts, including the film title and unrelated songs. In Metallica’s studio-album sequence, however, the third numbered entry is specifically “The Unforgiven III,” released on Death Magnetic.
