Metallica’s 1991 album Metallica, known as The Black Album, has achieved 16× Platinum certification in the United States.
The certification is awarded by the Recording Industry Association of America, which tracks shipments and later qualifying sales activity in the American market. A Platinum award represents one million album units under the relevant certification rules, so 16× Platinum signifies an extraordinary level of US success.
The album’s commercial performance was driven by its singles, extensive touring, and broad appeal beyond the traditional thrash metal audience. “Enter Sandman,” “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Wherever I May Roam,” and “Sad but True” all helped keep the record visible for years after its release.
The certification should not be confused with the album’s global sales total or with a separate Diamond designation. Certification categories can also change as industry accounting rules evolve. Nevertheless, the 16× Platinum figure is the recognized RIAA level associated with Metallica’s landmark 1991 album.
