What resolution did Microsoft identify as the Xbox Series S's target gaming resolution?

The story behind the answer

Microsoft identified 1440p as the Xbox Series S’s target gaming resolution.

The Xbox Series S was designed as a smaller, lower-cost companion to the Xbox Series X. Microsoft described it as targeting 1440p gaming, with support for higher refresh rates and upscaling toward 4K on compatible displays. Its design prioritized efficient digital delivery and modern Xbox features rather than native 4K rendering in every game.

The target resolution should not be read as a universal fixed output. Games can use dynamic resolution, different performance modes, or reconstruction techniques, and some media applications can output 4K. The console’s actual result depends on software and display settings.

The Series S also uses a custom AMD Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2-based GPU architecture, but with fewer compute resources than the Series X. It launched alongside the Series X on November 10, 2020.
