What perfume did Chanel launch in 1921 as its first fragrance?

The story behind the answer

Chanel launched Chanel No. 5 in 1921 as its first fragrance.

Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel commissioned the perfumer Ernest Beaux to create a modern fragrance for her fashion house. Beaux presented numbered samples, and Chanel selected sample number five, giving the perfume its name. It was introduced in 1921.

The fragrance became famous for its abstract floral-aldehydic composition and its minimalist bottle. Marilyn Monroe’s widely quoted association with Chanel No. 5 helped strengthen its cultural status, although she was not the perfume’s creator.

Chanel No. 19 and Coco Mademoiselle are later Chanel fragrances, so they cannot be the answer to a question about the house’s first perfume. No. 5 remains one of the best-known fragrances in luxury fashion.
