What optical-disc format did the original PlayStation 3 use for its games?

The story behind the answer

The original PlayStation 3 used Blu-ray Disc for its games.

Sony made the PlayStation 3 a Blu-ray player as well as a game console. Blu-ray discs offered substantially more storage than standard DVDs, allowing developers to use larger high-definition assets, though game size and development practices varied between titles.

The PlayStation 3 launched in Japan on November 11, 2006, and in North America on November 17, 2006. It was released during the high-definition optical-disc format rivalry between Blu-ray and HD DVD. Blu-ray ultimately became the winning high-definition disc format after major studio and industry support shifted toward it.

The console also supported other media and digital distribution through PlayStation Network. A frequent confusion is that the PlayStation 2 used DVD technology, while the PlayStation 3 introduced Blu-ray as the standard physical game medium in the PlayStation family.
