What online gaming service launched for the original Xbox in 2002?
Answer
Xbox Live
Answer
Xbox Live
Xbox Live launched for the original Xbox in 2002.
Microsoft introduced Xbox Live in November 2002 as an online service for the original Xbox. Players used a broadband internet connection and an Xbox Live account to compete online, communicate with other players, and download additional content.
The service helped distinguish Xbox from its competitors because online multiplayer was built into Microsoft's platform strategy from the beginning. Xbox Live required a broadband connection; the original Xbox did not support dial-up networking for the service.
Xbox Live later expanded substantially on Xbox 360, where the service added achievements, a redesigned digital marketplace, downloadable games, and richer social features. Microsoft eventually renamed the console subscription component Xbox Live Gold, while later subscription branding centered on Xbox Game Pass. These later names should not be confused with the original service launch.
