What numerical rating value does Dota 2 use for ranked matchmaking?

The story behind the answer

Dota 2 uses MMR, or matchmaking rating, as its numerical skill rating for ranked matchmaking.

MMR estimates a player’s competitive strength from match results and helps the game’s matchmaking system assemble teams with broadly comparable skill. Winning generally raises the rating, while losing generally lowers it, although the exact calculation has changed across different versions of Dota 2.

Dota 2 has also tracked core and support performance separately in parts of its matchmaking history. The game later presented progression through ranked medals and tiers, but those visible ranks did not replace MMR as the underlying rating concept.

MMR is commonly confused with ELO, LP, or SR. Elo is the name of a rating system used in several games and competitions, while LP is associated especially with League of Legends and SR with Overwatch. In Dota 2, the canonical term is matchmaking rating, abbreviated MMR.
