What name does the Quran use for Noah?

The story behind the answer

The Quran uses the name Nuh for Noah.

Nuh is a major prophet in Islam, and the Quran recounts his preaching, his people’s rejection, and the flood in several passages. The longest concentrated account appears in Surah 11, titled Hud, while Surah 71 is titled Nuh and focuses on his warnings to his people.

Islamic tradition generally identifies Nuh with the Noah of the Hebrew Bible and Christian Old Testament, but the Quranic presentation has its own emphases and details. It highlights Nuh’s long calling, his persistence, and the unbelief of many among his people.

The Arabic form Nuh should not be confused with other Quranic prophets. Hud and Salih are separate figures, and Lut corresponds to Lot. The English form Noah is common in translations and comparative discussions, while Nuh is the standard Quranic name.
