What name does Genesis give Noah’s wife in the Flood narrative?

The story behind the answer

Genesis gives no name for Noah’s wife in its Flood narrative.

The account refers to her simply as Noah’s wife when describing the people who enter and leave the Ark. Genesis names Noah’s sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—but does not provide the name of Noah’s wife or the wives of his sons.

Later Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions supplied different names. Naamah is one prominent Jewish traditional identification, based partly on a woman named Naamah in Genesis 4:22, but the biblical text does not explicitly say that this Naamah was Noah’s wife. Other later sources preserve other names.

This distinction matters because a traditional name is not the same as a name stated in Genesis. The canonical narrative deliberately leaves the women’s names unspecified while emphasizing the survival of Noah’s household and the continuation of humanity after the Flood.
