U2 used the name Passengers for the 1995 music project that recorded Original Soundtracks 1.
Passengers was a collaboration between U2 and producer Brian Eno. The project allowed the musicians to explore more ambient, experimental and soundtrack-like ideas than they generally pursued under the U2 name.
Original Soundtracks 1 was released in November 1995. Its best-known track, “Miss Sarajevo,” features Luciano Pavarotti and became the project’s most prominent single. The album also includes spoken-word and cinematic pieces, making it quite different from a conventional U2 studio album.
The name was not a separate permanent band with unrelated members. It was a credited project used to signal the album’s unusual collaborative character. U2 returned to its regular name for later studio work, including Pop, released in 1997.
