What name did Twitter adopt in July 2023 after Elon Musk’s takeover?

The story behind the answer

Twitter adopted the name X in July 2023 after Elon Musk’s takeover.

Musk completed his acquisition of Twitter in October 2022 and subsequently began changing the company’s identity. In April 2023, Twitter, Inc. was merged into X Corp. During July 2023, the platform’s name and branding changed from Twitter to X, and the familiar blue-bird identity was replaced by an X logo.

The rename fit Musk’s broader plan for an “everything app,” a concept associated with the X name long before the Twitter purchase. Musk had previously founded X.com, an online financial company that became part of PayPal, and he later created X Corp. as the parent company for the social platform.

Many users continued to call the service Twitter, and its short messages were often still called tweets. Official branding increasingly used “posts” and “reposts,” although older terminology remained common in journalism and everyday conversation.
