Before Destiny’s Child signed with Columbia Records, the group used the name Girl’s Tyme.
The Houston vocal group formed in the early 1990s and originally included Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson, and other performers during its changing early lineup. Under the name Girl’s Tyme, the young singers appeared on the television talent program Star Search in 1993.
Although Girl’s Tyme did not win on Star Search, the appearance helped bring attention to the group. Management and lineup changes followed, and the group eventually signed with Columbia Records. The name Destiny’s Child was adopted before the release of its major-label debut single, “No, No, No,” in 1997.
Some accounts spell the early name as “Girl’s Tyme,” while informal references may omit the apostrophe. The name should not be confused with Destiny’s Child, which became the group’s established recording identity and later included Michelle Williams alongside Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland.
