What mountain range does Genesis say the Ark came to rest among after the flood?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says the Ark came to rest among the mountains of Ararat after the flood.

Genesis 8:4 uses the plural phrase “mountains of Ararat,” rather than naming one summit. Ararat was an ancient geographical region associated with Urartu in the Armenian highlands. Later tradition commonly connected the biblical phrase with Mount Ararat, the prominent volcanic peak in eastern Turkey.

That distinction matters because the biblical wording does not explicitly say “Mount Ararat.” The single-mountain identification became especially influential in later Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions, as well as in modern popular culture.

Numerous expeditions and alleged sightings have claimed to locate the ark near Mount Ararat, but no discovery has been scientifically accepted as the biblical vessel. Ice, volcanic terrain, wood-like formations, and satellite images have all generated speculation. The strongest direct answer from Genesis is therefore the regional phrase, “the mountains of Ararat.”
