What mountain range does Genesis name in the account of where Noah’s Ark came to rest?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says Noah’s Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

Genesis 8:4 uses the plural phrase “mountains of Ararat,” describing the region where the Ark rested as the Flood waters receded. Ararat was an ancient geographical name associated with a kingdom and surrounding highlands in the area of eastern Anatolia and the South Caucasus. The biblical wording does not identify one precisely named peak.

The better-known phrase “Mount Ararat” comes from later interpretation and tradition. Modern Mount Ararat, in eastern Turkey, became the most famous proposed location, but the Genesis text itself says “mountains,” not specifically the summit of that mountain. Other proposed landing places have also appeared in religious and historical traditions.

This distinction matters because many summaries simplify the verse to say the Ark landed on Mount Ararat. That is a familiar traditional formulation, while “the mountains of Ararat” is the wording most directly supported by Genesis.
