What motion-sensing accessory did Microsoft launch for Xbox 360 in 2010?

The story behind the answer

Kinect was the motion-sensing accessory Microsoft launched for Xbox 360 in 2010.

Originally developed under the project name Project Natal, Kinect used cameras and sensors to track body movement and voice commands without requiring a handheld controller. Microsoft released it for Xbox 360 in November 2010.

The accessory launched with games such as Kinect Adventures!, which demonstrated full-body movement and cooperative play. Kinect became one of the fastest-selling consumer electronics products at launch, although its sales and long-term software support later declined.

Microsoft released a second-generation Kinect with Xbox One in 2013. That version was more deeply integrated into the console’s original user interface, but the Xbox One hardware was later sold without the accessory. Kinect technology also influenced projects outside games, including interactive installations, research and computer-vision applications.
