What model of aircraft does Ethan Hunt cling to during the opening stunt of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation?

The story behind the answer

Ethan Hunt clings to an Airbus A400M Atlas during the opening stunt of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.

The sequence shows Ethan attempting to board the aircraft as it takes off from a runway. Tom Cruise performed the stunt himself, secured to the outside of the aircraft while it climbed into the air. The scene became one of the film’s most publicized practical-action moments.

The Airbus A400M Atlas is a European military transport aircraft developed by Airbus Defence and Space. Its use in the sequence is sometimes confused with more familiar military transports such as the C-130 Hercules, but the aircraft shown is an A400M.

Rogue Nation was released in 2015 and directed by Christopher McQuarrie. The film also introduced Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust and continued the story of Ethan’s conflict with the covert organization known as the Syndicate.
