What launch vehicle carried Apollo 11 toward the Moon?
Answer
Saturn V
Answer
Saturn V
The launch vehicle that carried Apollo 11 toward the Moon was the Saturn V.
Standing 363 feet (110.6 meters) tall, the Saturn V was a three-stage heavy-lift rocket developed by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. Apollo 11 launched from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center on July 16, 1969.
The rocket's first stage used five F-1 engines burning kerosene and liquid oxygen. Its second and third stages used liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. The third stage performed the trans-lunar injection burn that sent the spacecraft from Earth orbit toward the Moon.
A common mix-up is confusing the Saturn V with the smaller Saturn IB. Saturn IB launched Apollo 7 and some uncrewed missions, but it did not provide the power needed for the crewed lunar missions. Saturn V launched every crewed Apollo mission that traveled to the Moon.
